While we may think they are trying to convince us with rational arguments, such as specifications, capabilities, ease of use, and design, we often overlook their real promise: a dream. This dream could represent a new lifestyle, career success, or social acceptance, and it&#x27;s often communicated as an underlying message.</strong></p>
<p>Car commercials, for instance, present cars as a means for living an adventurous life, impressing others, and comfortably traveling with loved ones. Apple leads you to believe that purchasing their devices will enhance your entire lifestyle, from exercising more to living in a beautiful environment. However, the reality may be quite the opposite, as one might experience a more fulfilling life without the constant distraction of technology.</p>
<p>It is crucial to recognize that companies spend millions of dollars marketing these dreams, which are often unattainable. For example, IKEA sells furniture, but their marketing campaigns focus on the promise of an organized, clutter-free, and comfortable home. While their products may contribute to this vision, it is still up to you to implement and maintain these changes.</p>
<p>Another interesting example is YouTuber Enes Yilmazer, a real estate enthusiast who showcases luxurious homes. His success lies not in the properties themselves, but in the way he presents them, highlighting a dream lifestyle. His videos cater to those who may never own such a house but dream of doing so, which has garnered him over 3 million subscribers.</p>
<p>Although we may not always realize it, advertisers are selling dreams. One could argue that the ethical boundaries become blurred when companies imply that purchasing their brand will lead to a certain lifestyle. As time progresses, we see an increase in this type of advertising, with a shift from promoting products to selling dreams.</p>
<p>Future advertisements may not even mention products at all. Perfume commercials, for instance, sell their product using beautiful people and locations, despite the fact that we can&#x27;t even smell the perfume through our screens. Other brands may follow this trend, focusing on developing brand loyalty rather than promoting specific products.</p>
<p>Even in the world of web development, companies like Laravel, a popular PHP framework, market their products as tools for ambitious entrepreneurs. They showcase successful applications and impressive statistics, but in reality, it&#x27;s still up to you to build a great service or product. Laravel can&#x27;t do that for you.</p>
<p>Ultimately, these marketing strategies reveal not only what people want functionally but also what they dream of achieving in the long run. And for brands, understanding these aspirations may be even more valuable than money itself.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Apple, the trillion-dollar tech giant, announced a new Journal app this week for their latest version of iOS and has left me wondering, once again, the company&#x27;s true intentions. I can&#x27;t help but ask myself if this is a genuine effort to address growing mental health concerns, or is there a more strategic motivation behind this move?</strong></p>
<p>While Apple has developed other health-related apps in the past, like the Health app and Screen Time, I have often questioned their true purpose. Are these apps genuinely designed to help users stay physically and mentally healthy, or do they serve to further entrench users within Apple&#x27;s ecosystem, making it difficult to switch to another brand without losing valuable, personal data in the process?</p>
<p>The story of the wealthy Belgian business man Eric Wittouck definitely offers an interesting parallel. Wittouck founded a sugar company called Tiense, and soon after a diet business called Weight Watchers. Just as Wittouck capitalized on both creating and solving a problem, Apple sells devices that contribute to screen addiction and mental health issues, and then provides a Journal app as a solution to the problem they helped create in the first place.</p>
<p>Apple&#x27;s Journal app appears to serve multiple strategic purposes. Firstly, it enhances their reputation by offering health-related applications free of charge, distancing them from the negative image commonly associated with big tech companies these days. Secondly, it essentially shifts the responsibility of device usage onto the user, similar to Screen Time, implying that the solution to feeling bad is not to reduce screen time but to engage with the device even more, this time through a different app.</p>
<p>Thirdly, their Journal app can be seen as another attempt to tie customers to Apple&#x27;s ecosystem. If users were to choose a journaling app that supports multiple platforms, they would have the freedom to take their data with them. By encouraging users to rely on Apple&#x27;s proprietary app, they effectively lock them into their ecosystem. This increased connection to Apple&#x27;s products and services also strengthens customer loyalty.</p>
<p>The use of AI in the Journal app is another point of concern. While Apple has built its reputation on privacy and security, the introduction of AI processing users&#x27; personal data raises questions about the future use of this information. How long will it be before Apple realizes the value of this intimate knowledge and potentially exploits it, either directly or indirectly?</p>
<p>While this last scenario may not seem very likely today, it&#x27;s crucial to remember that even seemingly benevolent tech giants like Apple ultimately prioritize their bottom line and shareholder satisfaction over the interests of their customers. As history has shown with companies like Facebook, initial good intentions can erode when financial pressures mount.</p>
<p>In conclusion, I believe we should remain vigilant and question whether the tools we rely on are truly in our best interests, or if we are simply used as pawns in a larger strategic game. While Apple&#x27;s health apps may be deemed useful by some, it is important not to overlook that there are alternative methods to enhance our mental and physical well-being that do not necessarily involve phone usage, and in fact, may be quite the opposite.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Throughout my life, I have often found myself navigating the contrasting worlds of logic and creativity. Whether it was providing the right answer to a math problem or coming up with multiple solutions based on a single piece of information, I have always been intrigued by the contradicting nature of these two modes of thinking. This phenomenon has continued to captivate my mind, leading me to explore the intricate relationship between logic/reasoning and creativity.</strong></p>
<p>As I grew older, I stumbled upon the concepts of <em>convergent</em> and <em>divergent</em> thinking. Convergent thinking essentially involves deriving a single answer from multiple sets of information, while divergent thinking allows for the generation of multiple answers based on smaller pieces of information. From a distance, these two almost appear to be polar opposites. These distinct thinking modes intrigued me, as they represented two different approaches to problem-solving and idea generation.</p>
<p>However, what surprised me from a sociological perspective is how frequently we emphasize challenges that require convergent thinking, especially when it comes to younger generations. The fear of not knowing certain things or falling behind socially often pushes us to prove our worth through measurable and objective responses. This societal pressure leads us to conform, utilizing logic to assert our intellectual capacities and gain social acceptance.</p>
<p>Conversely, if we were in an environment that valued creativity and divergent thinking, we would likely be eager to engage in the generation of new, innovative responses. Instead of the focus being solely on finding the &quot;correct&quot; answers, the social ladder would be built upon the ability to provoke new ideas or questions relative to the original input. This example demonstrates how our minds are constantly shaped by the need to fit into our social groups, sometimes at the expense of sacrificing our creative capacities.</p>
<p>However, I am optimistic about the evolving landscape of creativity in today&#x27;s world. We are now witnessing a greater acceptance and appreciation for cultural, artistic, and scientific endeavors. These realms acknowledge that there can be multiple answers to a single question, and those who create new meanings play a crucial role in shaping our future. As someone who identifies as a highly divergent thinker, I have often viewed convergent thinking as my biggest adversary. I feared that conforming to logical dead-ends would stifle my creativity. Yet, over the years, I have come to appreciate the value of convergent thinking as a building block for expanding our thoughts and providing structure to creative ideas.</p>
<p>The interplay between logic and creativity reveals a fascinating dynamic though. It is often challenging to switch between these mental modes simultaneously since they require different cognitive processes. For instance, creating a new name for a product engages divergent thinking, exploring numerous possibilities, while finding a bug in code demands a logical, step-by-step approach. In fact, recognizing this inherent limitation helped me integrate it into my daily work schedule, dedicating specific time and focus to each mode, rather than constantly toggling between the two.</p>
<p>In conclusion, I believe it is crucial to strike a balance between divergent and convergent thinking. Instead of viewing them as opposing forces, I now understand that they complement and enhance each other. By embracing both modes, we can broaden our perspectives, effectively address challenges, and unlock our full potential. Rather than being limited by social circumstances, we can cultivate our unique expressions and internal preferences when confronted with obstacles.</p>
<p>As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of technology and information, let&#x27;s try to be versatile thinkers who can tap into the logical and creative realms of our minds whenever our tasks demand so.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Ever since the dawn of the internet, we have seen a monumental shift in the way we live our lives. From communication and banking to entertainment and navigation, the internet has become an integral part of our daily routines. However, despite its ubiquitous presence, we still find ourselves at the mercy of mobile providers, grappling with data limits and hefty fees for crossing those boundaries. It&#x27;s high time we start treating the internet as the common good it truly is and strive towards making it broadly available, much like other essential resources.</strong></p>
<p>The technological landscape has evolved drastically since the early days of the iPhone and mobile data plans. We now live in a world where mobile providers capitalize on our need for constant connectivity, often at exorbitant prices. Gone are the days when text messages and phone calls were the primary means of communication; today, apps like Whatsapp and Signal rule the roost. It&#x27;s hard to imagine living without mobile data, yet we continue to allow large companies to treat it as a luxury item rather than a necessity.</p>
<p>It&#x27;s time for a radical change in our perspective. The internet has become a fundamental part of our existence, and it&#x27;s not going away. Shouldn&#x27;t we have reached a point where public internet access is free, or at the very least, far more affordable? While critics may argue that such an approach is overly idealistic and fails to take into account the economics and technical complexities involved, we must not let these arguments deter us from striving towards a more connected world.</p>
<p>Imagine a world where the internet is omnipresent, available to all at reliable speeds and at no cost. If this were the case, the need for complicated data plans, customer support, and corporate oversight would be significantly reduced. Instead of focusing on the bells and whistles of 5G and other cutting-edge technologies, we could prioritize maintaining a stable and accessible connection for all. Even if daily limits were imposed, the benefits of such a system would far outweigh the drawbacks.</p>
<p>Amazon seems to have been proactive in anticipating this trend by introducing a new offering for Amazon Prime customers: &quot;free&quot; cellular access in collaboration with telecommunication providers. While this particular scenario does not address the situation I am referring to (as it simply shifts power to an even larger corporation), it is noteworthy to witness their efforts in providing services that they believe would appeal to their customers.</p>
<p>Europe has made strides in recent years, allowing mobile users to take advantage of their data plans across different countries at the same rate. This is a commendable step in the right direction, but there&#x27;s still much work to be done. We need to continue advocating for universal internet availability, pushing the boundaries of what&#x27;s possible and redefining our relationship with this essential resource.</p>
<p>In conclusion, the internet has become an indispensable part of our lives, and it&#x27;s time we recognize and treat it as such. By embracing the notion of the internet as a common good, we can work towards a future where access is broad and freely available, unencumbered by data limits and corporate greed. A lot has changed since then, but I still find it enjoyable to revisit essays like these as a reminder of how significantly technology has evolved in a relatively short period of time. In that essay, I referred to the navigation system as a distinct device, separate from your phone, as there was no smartphone app available to integrate it yet.</strong></p>
<p>&#x27;Ambulance and police in Putten lost valuable minutes because their navigation systems couldn&#x27;t find the address where a man had a heart attack. Although police officers and paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man upon arrival, it was unsuccessful for the 60-year-old resident of Putten. The police cannot accurately determine the number of minutes lost, nor can it be said whether the man would have survived the heart attack if emergency services had arrived earlier.&#x27;</p>

<p>Route navigation systems are playing an increasingly significant role in our lives. When we go somewhere unfamiliar, we simply activate the navigation system with a push of a button and are guided to our destination. We don&#x27;t have to remember anything or ask a passerby for directions. Sometimes, this system even determines the difference between life and death, as you read earlier. Route navigation systems have a profound influence on people&#x27;s behavior, and it wouldn&#x27;t surprise me if traffic signs become obsolete in the future since everyone pays more attention to their navigation system. In short, we are living in a time when people are increasingly trading their innate sense of direction for a digital road map. It&#x27;s a time when a new media revolution awaits us.</p>
<p>Speaking of a media revolution, it refers to a situation where a new technology ultimately reshapes people&#x27;s way of thinking and acting, accompanied by a transformation of society itself. In other words, a media revolution changes the entire world. The first media revolution was the invention of writing, the second was the invention of the printing press, and the third revolution is referred to as the electronic information revolution. All of them have had significant consequences on the way we live today. Furthermore, they have occurred at an increasingly rapid pace, suggesting that we might already be in the midst of a fourth media revolution.</p>
<p>First and foremost, route navigation systems eliminate the need for people to think about which route to take to reach their destination. When going on vacation, you simply enter the address into your navigation system, press &#x27;OK&#x27; on the screen, and you&#x27;re good to go. Not long ago, you would have needed a bulky road map, and even then, you couldn&#x27;t be certain if it was up to date. The less people need to think about whether they&#x27;re heading in the right direction, the more they rely on their route navigation system. If you&#x27;re on your way to a skiing trip and end up in a meadow, you&#x27;re more likely to doubt yourself than the navigation system. This lack of awareness also affects your geographical knowledge, as there seems to be no need to know where Haarlem is nowadays. As long as the navigation system knows. However, blind trust in the system also has its advantages: since you have to think less while driving, you can pay more attention to the road, making it safer. One thing is certain, though, route navigation systems have a significant impact on how we think about traffic nowadays.</p>
<p>Secondly, people now control their cars based on the instructions they receive from their navigation systems. If a friendly voice tells you to turn left, you will turn left. If the voice says to make a U-turn, you&#x27;ll try your best to make a safe U-turn in a busy shopping street. However, the more people drive based on instructions, the less they rely on their intuition. Sometimes, this leads to unfounded choices. Here&#x27;s a perfect example: a driver from Wassenaar ended up driving onto the ice in Zoetermeer after receiving the instruction &quot;turn right now&quot; from his navigation system. The man took the instruction quite literally and found himself on a slope specifically designed for launching boats. He ended up driving onto the ice without realizing it and sank along with his car. Fortunately, he was unharmed, but he couldn&#x27;t use his car or navigation system anymore. In other words, people sometimes make choices based on their navigation systems that they wouldn&#x27;t make otherwise if they were relying on their instincts. However, following that friendly advice also has several benefits. The route generated by the system is the most efficient one, which means you&#x27;ll arrive at your destination sooner and save fuel. This is not only good for the environment but also for your wallet. In short, from the above story, we can see how much influence route navigation systems have on our behavior in traffic these days.</p>
<p>Thirdly, in the future, route navigation systems will likely become standard equipment in cars. This is similar to how it happened with car radios. In the beginning, car radios were considered a luxury and offered only as an option. Later, in 1935, Fiat included radios as standard equipment in some models. Finally, in &#x27;71, Philips introduced the well-known stereo FM, which is still used today. This future standardization will also influence the availability of other media. Why would you broadcast audio advertisements when you can convey the message visually on someone&#x27;s navigation system? Additionally, traffic signs will probably become unnecessary since everyone can read the speed limit from their screens. Signs displaying &quot;Amsterdam 10 km&quot; will also seem redundant since that information appeared on the screen earlier. Moreover, all driving students nowadays receive lessons with a navigation system, and practical exams involve driving a predefined route. In short, the route navigation system is reshaping our society.</p>
<p>However, there will always be people who choose not to use a navigation system. Some due to driving older cars, while others simply out of conservatism. Yet, considering the growing popularity of the system due to its numerous advantages, I strongly doubt that there will be people in the future who ignore this device. I expect that owning a navigation system will become as commonplace as having a phone or a computer. Furthermore, the financial barrier is being eliminated by the significant price drops in recent years. This trend is expected to continue, making navigation systems accessible to everyone. Nevertheless, there will always be people who prefer a physical map over a digital one. For them, living without a navigation system will probably be akin to living without a phone.</p>
<p>Therefore, the route navigation system has set us on the path of a fourth media revolution. It has not only transformed people&#x27;s way of thinking but also their behavior in traffic. Moreover, once the system becomes standard equipment in cars, our society will undergo drastic changes.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>In a world where technology is advancing at an unprecedented rate, the lines between our digital and physical reality are becoming increasingly blurred. The episode Play Test from the popular series Black Mirror and the film Beau is Afraid both explore the fascinating intersection of mental health and the human mind in regards to technology and society. I&#x27;d like to discuss the connections between these two works, as well as the potential implications for the future of augmented reality and brain-computer interfaces.</strong></p>
<p>Play Test tells the story of a man who, after finding himself broke in London, signs up for an &quot;odd job&quot; through an app. Unbeknownst to him, this job involves participating in a demo of a new headset that is able to project the user&#x27;s deepest fears as part of his real world. Throughout the episode, the protagonist encounters a variety of unsettling manifestations of his own issues, thoughts, fears, and doubts. This concept closely mirrors the current state of AR/VR headsets, which are capable of blending the digital and physical worlds in increasingly sophisticated ways.</p>
<p>Similarly, the film Beau is Afraid follows the emotional journey of a man confronting his deepest fears and anxieties. Directed by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix, the movie presents a visceral and compelling exploration of the human psyche. Much like &quot;Play Test,&quot; the protagonist&#x27;s mind is projected onto the world, allowing the audience to see the world through his eyes and experience his internal struggles as external manifestations.</p>
<p>The technological advancements being made by companies such as Neuralink provide a fascinating parallel to the concepts explored in Play Test. Neuralink is currently developing brain-computer interfaces that involve implanting small devices under the skin to connect directly with the brain. While the technology is still in its infancy, the potential to augment reality in the way that Play Test imagines seems more plausible than ever.</p>
<p>It&#x27;s possible that, in the future, a combination of AR/VR headsets and brain-computer interfaces could enable us to create and experience our own mental projections in real-time. This could involve the implanted chip wirelessly transmitting data to the headset, which would then interpret and display the information using advanced algorithms and artificial intelligence. Put simply, the impactful effect witnessed in the episode of Play Test could be more imminent than we realize, especially when technologies are utilized in combination with one another.</p>
<p>Though at the same time, the concept raises ethical questions about the potential consequences of allowing our innermost thoughts and fears to be externalized using technologies. While the technology could offer numerous benefits, such as therapeutic applications and enhanced creative expression, it also carries the risk of exacerbating mental health issues if not used responsibly. Therefore it&#x27;s important to ensure that these innovations are used to benefit society as a whole. If there is one thing that Black Mirror has taught us, it is that we must carefully consider the implications of developing powerful, invasive technologies for humans.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, these entertaining depictions offer a fascinating glimpse into the potential future of technology in relation to mental health. As we continue to push the boundaries of what&#x27;s possible, it&#x27;s essential that we remain mindful of the ethical implications and work towards harnessing these advancements for the greater good. Only time will tell if we can successfully navigate these uncharted waters, but one thing is certain – the future promises to be both exhilarating and challenging at the same time.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Some companies may struggle in this regard if they have not identified any real issues in the user experience, mistakenly believing their current solutions are adequate.</strong></p>
<p>While most users tolerate imperfect experiences for lack of better options or time to complain, everyone has encountered digital interfaces that felt somehow “off.” We are left making assumptions to fill in gaps, speculating about the system’s inner workings to achieve our goals. Tech-savvy critics are quick to point out these flaws, yet for the average user, a system’s technical details are simply irrelevant. Excellent user experience relies on interfaces that map to users’ mental models of how something should work.</p>
<p>Designers can be reluctant to rename something as simple as a “Back” button to clarify its purpose, like “Change Shipping Address.” Yet labelling is a straightforward first step toward aligning the interface with the user’s perspective. Icons and emoji are other simple ways to forge intuitive connections without disrupting existing layouts. More radically, designers could ask users how they would describe each step if starting from scratch, then create interfaces reflecting those mental models.</p>
<p>Metaphors provide another method for mapping interfaces to users’ thinking. Referring to physical objects, for example, gives people a familiar context for navigating digital tools. While interfaces have evolved toward minimalism, ostensibly for efficiency, this move away from visual metaphors was more likely driven by developers’ and designers’ interests than users’. Thoughtful use of visual metaphors doesn&#x27;t have to be considered &quot;overkill” when done right.</p>
<p>An ideal interface mirrors how users would design the experience if they could draw it <em>themselves</em>. Consider sending a digital birthday card: rather than clicking through screens to enter address details in forms, many would probably prefer writing on an envelope. Letting users enter an address on a virtual envelope makes the process more engaging, memorable, and human. This is just an example but it demonstrates how we often translate physical activities to digital ones.</p>
<p>In my opinion, most digital interfaces could be better attuned to how users expect to interact with them. Instead of designing first and testing later, designers should start by asking users what they want. Technology already enables highly fluid web and mobile apps; used well, it could yield interactions that feel natural rather than like “glorified Word documents.” Designers have an ethical responsibility to understand the user, and only by doing so can they achieve excellence.</p>
<p>With vision and empathy, technology companies can craft digital experiences that feel seamless, intuitive, and even joyful. By aligning interfaces with users’ own mental models, designers can turn tools into natural extensions of human capabilities. The companies that recognize this opportunity and make the effort to connect with users in this deeper way are the ones that will shape the future of digital experiences.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>The turning point came when big tech companies, like Google, began to realize the value of this massive, collectively-created database. Although the search giant provided better search results, it mostly kept the accumulated knowledge to itself. This changed in late 2022 with the introduction of ChatGPT, which democratized access to the vast wealth of information on the web by providing a simple way to query the most accurate and reliable content. This development not only enlightened web users but also began to disarm Google&#x27;s power.</p>
<p>Remarkably, ChatGPT&#x27;s initial success happened outside of the app store ecosystem, proving that services could thrive without Apple as a gatekeeper. Although Microsoft, another for-profit company, is behind ChatGPT, the development can be judged on its own merits, independent of Bing or other commercial products. The web&#x27;s potential to take us to the next level is evident, and ChatGPT is a prime example of how we can create even better content easier and faster than ever before.</p>
<p>However, let us entertain a dystopian scenario where one company controls the entire web, dictating its rules and regulations solely for its own benefit. In this world, the vibrant, versatile landscape of languages and formats would be lost, replaced by a monolithic, oppressive system that stifles creativity and innovation. Such a dark vision underscores the importance of maintaining the openness and collaborative nature of the web as it exists today.</p>
<p>As the web evolves, it&#x27;s crucial to ensure that our initiatives and goals align with the principles that have guided its development and maintenance. By upholding the values of a democratized system and fostering collaboration, we can continue to harness the web&#x27;s full potential for the greater good. While it started as a school assignment, it has remained of personal interest to me. Looking back on it now, I find it intriguing to revisit the ideas and insights explored in the article.</strong></p>
<p>Facebook, Hyves, Twitter - we can hardly ignore them anymore. They play an increasingly significant role in our lives and strongly determine our way of communication, or our social interaction. And everybody participates: Facebook alone has more than 500 million active users, and more than a billion &#x27;tweets&#x27; are sent out into the world per month via Twitter. We often see this development in our daily lives: people busy with their iPhones or Android phones to stay up-to-date with the latest updates. Occasionally, it seems as if the online social network has become a basic need.</p>
<p>In 1943, psychologist Abraham Maslow published a hierarchical ordering of five needs that every human always tries to fulfill. The first of these is the physiological need, or the need for food and drink. As soon as this need is fulfilled, we move on to the next need, which is safety and security. When we no longer have to worry about that, we long for social contact (think of friendship, love, and positive social relationships). Found a nice boyfriend or girlfriend and have enough friends in your life? Then you probably also have the need for status within that group of friends or within your relationship. In other words, you will want recognition and appreciation from time to time. If you can achieve this, you will likely lead a good life. However, there is still a higher level. We are talking about the need for self-actualization, or in layman&#x27;s terms, &#x27;self-realization&#x27;. So the need to develop yourself and get the best out of yourself.</p>
<p>You could say that most of us quickly fulfill the first two needs (food and safety). So it mainly comes down to the last life needs. Let&#x27;s take another look at these three needs: social contact, recognition and appreciation, and self-realization. Interestingly enough, we see the same needs on Facebook, Hyves, and Twitter: the need for social contact can be translated into the number of online friends you have. If you are new to a social network, you will probably start looking for friends, or in this case, social contacts. Looking at the next need, that of recognition and appreciation, we see that this can be seen as positive reactions like &#x27;Respect!&#x27; or &#x27;Like&#x27;. This shows that you liked, found funny, or found interesting someone&#x27;s message or photo. Then we have the phase of self-actualization left. But how is self-realization possible via a social network? Simple: thanks to an extensive profile page where you confront yourself with questions like &quot;What do I like to do?&quot; and &quot;What are actually my interests?&quot;. Additionally, Facebook, for example, allows us to express our interests thanks to a simple &#x27;Like&#x27; button, making us aware of the things we like again. This is also a form of self-realization, as you get to know yourself in this way.</p>
<p>Online social networks seem to be an excellent solution for no less than three of our life needs. The question, however, is whether everyone goes through these phases and, if so, to what extent do they do that? Can someone with 500 social contacts still need more friends? In short, will that hunger ever be quenched? The answer is yes and no. Research has shown that the average person cannot maintain more than &#x27;only&#x27; 148 social contacts. In other words, when someone has 300 friends, they can only have real contact with half of them. This answers the question of whether everyone goes through this phase. When it comes to social contact, everyone, whether you want to or not, will fulfill this need. But how do we explain people with more than 600 friends? Are they still looking for social contact? No. Chances are they are already in the next stage, that of recognition and appreciation. They no longer collect their social contacts out of the need for social contact, but mainly to increase their status within the group.</p>
<p>Then we arrive at the next stage, that of recognition and appreciation. As mentioned earlier, social networks offer us multiple ways to satisfy this need. Think of the &#x27;Respect!&#x27; button on Hyves or the &#x27;Like&#x27; button on Facebook. But is it really possible to fulfill this need? Stine Jansen and Rob Wijnberg don&#x27;t think so, as they describe in their book So I Am (2010). We humans are constantly fighting each other for recognition, for positive confirmation. Very philosophically speaking: it is a desire to be desired by another. This would mean that the &#x27;Like&#x27; button is only enjoyable for a short time, and the &#x27;Respect!&#x27; you get subsequently disappears like snow in the sun. The authors of So I Am agree that recognition is an insatiable need. This may sound negative, but it is actually a very positive phenomenon, as described in the book. Because the more recognition we get, the more self-aware we become.</p>
<p>And so we have arrived at the last need: self-actualization. Unlike the previous needs, this is not a fundamental need. In other words, not fulfilling this need will certainly not decrease your quality of life. However, there are plenty of ways to achieve self-actualization. The extensive profile page was already mentioned for this purpose, where you essentially hold up a mirror and ask yourself, &quot;Who am I really?&quot; But nowadays, it seems to revolve strongly around what you find fun, good, cool, funny or interesting. It&#x27;s no surprise that companies have completely focused on the consumer and their ambitious need for self-actualization. For example, in 2010, Microsoft launched the Windows 7 Phone. This mobile phone seems quite normal at first glance, but it stands out strongly from its competitors. The user is able to customize almost everything according to his personal preferences, making each phone different. The phone becomes a reflection of you as a person. Media scholar Marshall McLuhan described media as &quot;extensions of our senses,&quot; and then the phone would be an extension of our speech7. But this phone would also be an extension of our personality and identity. In addition, creativity is a strong characteristic of self-actualization, according to Abraham Maslow, so the idea of designing your own phone is primarily a form of self-actualization.</p>
<p>But not only Microsoft seems to have noticed the trend of self-actualization. For example, LinkedIn has launched a website where you can see what kind of &quot;brand&quot; you are, or in other words, how you are in the workplace. By answering a number of questions about yourself, you will find out whether you are an Alternative Thinker, Global Guru, or for example, a Multibrand. Apparently, people also want to be able to develop themselves in a business sense and not just have a phone that matches their tie.</p>
<p>The need for self-actualization seems to be growing. People want to know more and more who they are and what they want. All thanks to the online social network? Probably not. But they have certainly helped us to achieve this basic need in the first place. Long live Facebook.</p>]]></content:encoded>

This fundamental aspect of human experience has profound implications for how we understand and interact with the world around us. Just the thought of this inspires me.</strong></p>
<p>Our perception of reality is inherently limited by the nature of our senses and the properties of our physical surroundings. We interpret information through words, sounds, and visual imagery, but we also experience emotions, art, and deep feelings that are not easily translated into words. Our physical means of expression may be limiting us from accessing deeper layers of meaning and more complex hierarchies of information. This is where advanced technologies like OpenAI&#x27;s ChatGPT come into play; these computer systems are so advanced that we cannot fully comprehend or express their inner workings, much like our own minds. Yet, we still convert their output back into relatively simple forms, such as text.</p>
<p>If we could transfer information without any limitations or intermediate channels, we might be able to access the essence of reality. However, as tempting as this may seem, our minds might not be suited for handling such complex structures, so we will need to educate ourselves and start small, almost like learning how to read. Developing this ability to process <em>unfiltered</em> information could become a new skill in the future that we need to learn and control.</p>
<p>I vividly recall a TED talk from several years ago in which a paralyzed individual was given information through a sophisticated skeleton that transferred vibrations in a specific pattern. This allowed him to perceive information through touch in a way that could not be conveyed through traditional means. Our brains are not limited by our senses or physical surroundings, as evidenced by the fact that we can dream, contemplate, create, love, and fantasize. This demonstrates that information is fluid, and we are incredibly adaptable in processing the data that we encounter.</p>
<p>Pure information is a concept that goes beyond text, speech, images, and media. It encompasses the objective existence of an abstraction or object being described by the subject in its purest form, independent of its visual characteristics, for example. One could argue that the actual information is made up of more than just the parts we perceive as real using our familiar and common channels. To process such pure information, we might even need to consider limiting or disabling certain senses that could be considered essectively just noise at one point.</p>
<p>I think this transition to computed information and symbiotic conversion is fascinating and will hopefully be explored further in the coming years, with companies like Neuralink potentially playing a significant role. As we continue to develop our relationship with AI, we may progress from using AI as a passive output to receiving input from the AI, proactively informing us before we are even aware. The challenge will be controlling this process and ensuring that it is used for good rather than evil, with appropriate mechanisms and ethical considerations in place.</p>]]></content:encoded>

In many ways, the company has played a crucial role in shaping our modern tech landscape, but at what cost? Apple&#x27;s control over its ecosystem, especially when it comes to apps, has also limited the industry by only providing functionality that benefits the company in the long run. With few other vendors comparable to Apple, and Google playing a similar game, consumers have grown used to this restricted environment.</strong></p>
<p>The recent court ruling that Apple was not in violation of power abuse and antitrust laws regarding their App Store is a prime example of this struggle. While the ruling favored Apple, the company must now allow third-party developers to refer users to their own payment systems, which I believe is a step in the right direction. As a side effect though, it continues to raise interesting questions about the limitations Apple imposes on users and developers, and whether the company could be more open to third-party integrations.</p>
<p>Apple&#x27;s control over the mobile industry began with the iPhone and has grown alongside the app ecosystem. As third-party developers invested heavily in creating apps for iOS, they became reliant on Apple&#x27;s success for their own income. This symbiotic relationship has led to a form of stockholm syndrome, where developers want Apple to succeed even as the company enforces restrictive policies. The same goes for consumers, who contribute to this growth by continuing to purchase Apple&#x27;s products without questioning, as long as their favorite apps are supported.</p>
<p>Critics argue that Apple&#x27;s tight control over apps is not truly about consumer safety, but rather about maintaining dominance and control over the industry. Apple&#x27;s insistence on protecting user data may be genuine, but it&#x27;s hard not to wonder how their stance might change if their fortunes shifted. In a hypothetical scenario where Apple&#x27;s stock drops and the company must adapt to survive, would they still prioritize user safety over more profitable avenues? I often ponder what the outcome would be if the cards were dealt differently.</p>
<p>One potential solution to Apple&#x27;s restrictive app environment is the integration of <em>web apps</em> as part of their native apps. Modern web development allows for many features and a smooth user experience that rivals native apps. An app store based on web apps could replace a significant portion of the apps currently available for iOS devices. However, Apple&#x27;s reluctance to fully support web integrations, especially within third-party browsers, suggests that they may view the web as a serious threat. In fact, even third-party browsers on iOS, such as Firefox, are essentially built on top of Apple&#x27;s own Safari browser. This is exactly the top priority of the <a href="https://open-web-advocacy.org">Open Web Advocacy</a>, an initiative led by developers worldwide who view this #BrowserBan as a major threat to the future of the open web.</p>
<p>The challenge lies in understanding what is possible outside of Apple&#x27;s walled garden when the company actively limits access to alternative solutions. While Apple may continue to introduce innovations designed for its users, it&#x27;s important to recognize that these advancements may also serve to distract from the broader possibilities beyond Apple&#x27;s control. In the future, one can only hope that the web continues to evolve as fast as it currently is and that more technology companies become open to the idea of using web applications as the basis for their content ecosystems. With greater developer and consumer freedom, the tech industry can continue to grow and innovate, unhindered by the limitations imposed by dominant companies like Apple.</p>

<p>During Apple&#x27;s recent unveiling event, they introduced the ability for Safari to add websites to the macOS dock and promised increased support for web applications on iOS, including push notifications. This is a significant step forward for web development, possibly influenced by legislative factors. However, there are unanswered technical questions, like whether Safari&#x27;s web app integration can be called from a website using JavaScript, enabling a simple &quot;Install App&quot; button for better user accessibility.</p>
<p>An intriguing aspect is the potential impact on Apple&#x27;s App Store revenues if users lean towards installing web apps instead of native applications. As web applications gain integration and popularity among users, app developers may opt to create web versions exclusively, automatically deploying on iOS and other devices. This shift towards web development could entice major applications like Netflix and Spotify, allowing them to bypass Apple&#x27;s subscription tax and save substantial amounts annually. The trend suggests that most native applications could transition effectively to web equivalents.</p>
<p>Despite these implications, it remains unclear why Apple made this change. While appreciating the announcement, it&#x27;s hard to imagine Apple solely prioritizing user interests without considering the effects on App Store revenue. Being a trillion-dollar company with intelligent decision-makers, there are potential factors to explore behind this sudden shift.</p>
<p>One possibility is Apple proactively addressing regulatory pressure by introducing web app integration, preemptively tackling potential legal issues related to browser limitations. Another explanation could be their focus on &quot;spatial computing&quot; as the future application format, where web applications may pose a lesser threat compared to traditional ones.</p>
<p>Regardless of the true reason, I hope web applications become mainstream and users realize their versatility, not being tied to a single ecosystem for specific applications. <p>Though I could engage with this content during work hours, as it is often applicable to my job, I can&#x27;t help but feel it&#x27;s a waste of time. So, I procrastinate. After pondering this phenomenon for some time, I&#x27;ve gained a few insights that I&#x27;d like to share with you. Do know that I have not yet found a complete solution.</p>
<p>First, I&#x27;ve noticed that I enjoy going through my newsletters most when I&#x27;m in a situation where I&#x27;d otherwise be wasting time, such as waiting in line, sitting in my car, or waiting for players in an online game. If there&#x27;s even a remote possibility that I could be doing something more productive, I&#x27;ll choose that option instead, whether it&#x27;s cleaning my desk, cooking, or making my bed. There&#x27;s definitely a pattern here, but the lesson to be learned is still unclear.</p>
<p>Secondly, I&#x27;ve discovered a helpful trick for digesting content: I store anything interesting in my Raindrop bookmarking app after getting a general sense of its relevance. This allows me to continue browsing other links without feeling guilty for not reading the entire piece. While helpful, this approach can sometimes feel like sweeping things under the rug.</p>
<p>Third, I leverage a handy Firefox feature that lets me send tabs from my phone to my laptop. When I open my laptop, the tab is prominently displayed, nudging me to read the content. However, this strategy can lead to rushed reading or even neglecting other tasks I initially planned to complete. While not ideal, it does help me navigate the dense jungle of developer news.</p>
<p>On a related note, I&#x27;d like to urge content creators to stick to one core topic and avoid excessive digressions or fluff. Be concise, review your content, and ensure it is both informative and visually appealing. You can even enlist the help of AI tools like ChatGPT if you&#x27;re unsure of what to change. In fact, this very article was checked and rewritten by ChatGPT-4.</p>
<p>The topic of developer FOMO is seldom discussed, and I believe it deserves more attention. A TLDR version for most content would be ideal, but summarizing often risks losing the core message, making it a challenging situation for both writers and readers. Unsubscribing from some news sources is an option, but let&#x27;s face it, most of us are unlikely to actually do that.</p>
<p>So, while I haven&#x27;t found the ultimate solution for dealing with developer FOMO, these insights have helped me better manage my information consumption. The key is to find the balance that works for you, recognizing that there&#x27;s no one-size-fits-all answer to this struggle.</p>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Try solving a PHP problem using CSS and you probably wouldn&#x27;t get very far. This is to be expected, since a certain set of rules does not apply to a different <em>scope of logic</em>. Then again, wouldn&#x27;t you be curious to see what CSS would come up with we insisted? Scoped logic refers to the abstract idea and application of logic being highly contextual, and that it might take us more than just familiar methods to come up with new answers if we truly want to expand our knowledge and understanding of the world around us.</strong></p>
<p>As illustrated with the coding example, while it may be the case that another domain may not have the same experience in dealing with certain logic, it does not mean there are no parallels or overlap at all. Take quantum mechanics for example. When it was first discovered, there was very little support. It was not possible that this microscopic world with all its quirks would share the same world as nature as we knew it up until that point. However, it turns out that this is in fact the case, and more importantly, it has opened up doors to understanding the larger questions as a result. To me this shows just how easy reality can change when you keep an open mind.</p>
<p>A wise man once said, &quot;The more you think you understand quantum mechanics, the less you do.&quot; Although this can be interpreted many different ways, I would personally interpret it the way I consider information from when I was much younger, which is the more information we gain and the more intelligent we may feel, the less we are actually capable of gaining new information. For one thing, we may eventually run out of available options compared to the beginning, but more importantly, we are steered down a path that might make sense looking ahead and back, but at some point, we simply are no longer able able to justify all the steps taken together. There may be flaws in our thinking from the beginning that have continued on throughout in the rest of our path and solidified in our reasoning as a result.</p>
<p>This idea is further exemplified in a rather silly, but practical situation like doing the dishes. Quite often I find myself forcefully trying to fit a wet plate or pan onto a crowded rack, while I could have just dried it off by hand, therefore forgetting my initial goal entirely. The phenomenon I am describing feels like cognitive dissonance, but on a larger scale. While we are becoming blind to the world we tend to think as irrelevant, we suddenly discover that all this time we might have been able to resolve something entirely differently in the first place. To put it more dramatically, each step in a certain direction makes us less objective.</p>
<p>This phenomenon is becoming even more apparent with the rise of AI. Many people have jobs where they have a certain level of expertise within a specific field under a particular set of logic and rules, trying to solve X and Y to contribute to Z. However, AI is now becoming a viable option for solving Z, removing the need for X and Y altogether. This has caused many people to question what made them do this in the first place and whether they were ever capable of solving something as accurately now accomplished so much easier. To me, this shows just how fast our methods can become irrelevant if we lose sight of our initial goals.</p>
<p>If we were to compare our knowledge to a library, it might seem obvious that all information is stored within the books. However, it&#x27;s important to remember that those same books are placed on shelves, within bookcases, on different floors and inside of a building. This metaphor highlights the possibility that we might only search for information in specific places using conventional means. To make new observations, we need to consider alternative approaches that challenge our traditional methods. Therefore, it&#x27;s crucial to think outside the books <em>(pun intended)</em> and explore different ways of acquiring knowledge.</p>
<p>When we feel like we are interacting with something that feels greater than ourselves, perhaps even to the level of transcendence, we often attribute it to emotions, spirituality, superstition, or romanticism. Most of us have experienced at least something we weren&#x27;t able to explain immediately. Time goes by and the cynic in our mind tends to rationalize and provide explanations for such experiences using our familiar logic, making it increasingly hard for us to stay open to new insights and perspectives. The point I&#x27;m trying to make is that perhaps we shouldn&#x27;t be too hard on ourselves when we discuss things never encountered before or are hard to translate to words in the first place.</p>
<p>This raises the question of whether or not we are capable of solving something at all if it turns out to be simply outside our range. I am not referring to something outside of our vision due to the lack of better instruments, but rather that we might not have the capacity to process the very question itself. In the best scenario it&#x27;s due to an error in our reasoning, but it may also be the case we are simply incapable of understanding entirely. For example, claims of there being more than the four dimensions we know of. Have you ever tried to think in multiple times? It&#x27;s quite hard to be honest and it gives me anxiety just thinking about it. We are limited in this way by the very existence of &quot;limit&quot; itself.</p>
<p>So, how can we deal with this? Personally I believe we should consider utilizing AI not just for answers, but for generating <em>questions</em> as well. AI has the potential to provide us with a unique perspective and a fresh set of logic and rules that we may not be able to come up with on our own. However, this can only be achieved if we allow AI to operate with a versatile and diverse set of input data. Without this, we risk falling into an echo chamber of our own questions and answers. To truly explore intriguing questions, we must be open to the unconventional and allow AI to take its own course. This may lead to ideas that initially seem like nonsense, but could potentially be the key to discovering the next breakthrough in science, such as quantum mechanics.</p>
<p>I&#x27;ve been thinking about this idea a lot lately. I believe that this &quot;scoped logic&quot;, as I like to call it, is an important concept to consider when we approach new problems and challenges in life. We should be aware of the broader context of a problem, and whether or not the logic we are applying to it is appropriate to solve it. If not, we should seek out different perspectives and approaches to expand our understanding and ultimately find new solutions. And who knows, perhaps AI will be able to help us out with that.</p>

It almost feels too good to be true.</strong></p>
<p>However, the ease of use can be misleading for newcomers who are unfamiliar with the framework&#x27;s inner workings. Much of Laravel&#x27;s logic is hidden from us behind clever methods and files. This can make it challenging for developers who want to learn to use Laravel and PHP simultaneously, as it can be hard to distinguish between PHP&#x27;s native methods and Laravel&#x27;s custom functionality. Therefore Laravel&#x27;s simplicity can feel like a double-edged sword for those just starting out.</p>
<p>As an experienced PHP developer, I find Laravel&#x27;s source code elegant and well-crafted, but it can also be overwhelming to explore the framework from the inside out. Many developers, including myself, want to understand the inner workings of the framework rather than just getting a site off the ground. Laravel&#x27;s rigid conventions can also limit flexibility, as it has its own way of doing things, making it difficult to implement unique solutions or work with existing systems that do not conform to Laravel&#x27;s standards.</p>
<p>Although Laravel is considered a great choice among many developers, at the same time it&#x27;s essential to recognize its trade-offs carefully and consider any potential limitations of the framework. While its built-in features and easy-to-use ecosystem can save you time and effort in the development process, understanding the framework&#x27;s raw functionality may be crucial for those looking to expand their programming experience.</p>
<p>At the same time, I realize that finding the right balance can be challenging to Laravel as well, given the vast and varied nature of their audience. The framework caters to beginners and experienced developers alike, making it a daunting task to create documentation that fits the expectations of both of these groups. Despite this difficulty, Laravel&#x27;s documentation is exemplary and has definitely played a significant role in the framework&#x27;s success.</p>
<p>However, to help developers better understand the underlying mechanisms at play, Laravel might just benefit from providing additional documentation on how things work behind the scenes. While the framework&#x27;s ease of use and robust ecosystem are undoubtedly convenient, there sure is a lot happening under the hood, and understanding this may be important to some developers, including myself.</p>
<p>While I don&#x27;t want to seem overly critical, I do believe this is an issue worth addressing. I&#x27;m grateful for Laravel&#x27;s existence and the fact that it allows me to pursue web development as a full-time job. However, I can&#x27;t help but think about my younger, less experienced self who struggled to comprehend both PHP and Laravel simultaneously. It&#x27;s essential for those developers to have a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms at play.</p>
<p>In conclusion, Laravel&#x27;s ability to offer an excellent starting point for web application development is a significant advantage. However, the framework&#x27;s &quot;hidden magic&quot; can present challenges for developers looking to increase their understanding, flexibility, and control over their code. <p>Google, on the other hand, still has a joker to play with their quantum computer. While it is a powerful technology, it remains unclear what role it will play in the future in terms of commercialization and distributing their applications and services. It is not a guarantee that this will serve as their next search engine, and the future of the technology is still uncertain.</p>
<p>Microsoft has been playing their hand with lots of confidence, but time will tell if they have moved too fast and have something else to offer their clients. While Microsoft has been making significant strides in utilizing AI technology so far, it is unclear if they will be able to sustain their momentum and if their clients will remain loyal to them in the long run (yes, Bing).</p>
<p>The real power of AI lies in its real-world applications, and it will be up to developers to help shape the future and extend the vision of the original creators of AI technology. Time will tell how the AI landscape will evolve, and it is possible that Apple and Google will once again become driving forces behind this technology. However, there is a hope that they will remain just another <em>driver</em> instead of the operating system it runs on.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>In fact, the browser has been our primary way of accessing content on the web for years. By building apps primarily for the web, developers can offer consumers a more affordable and reliable way to access their favorite applications from any device.</p>
<p>Web standards are globally recognized and will continue to be improved in the coming years. While there may be some challenges related to hardware and sensor support, these issues can be resolved through agreements and compatibility from vendors.</p>

<p>Back in the day, it definitely was my favorite way to create websites. In addition to the accessible drag-and-drop interface, another significant advantage of Flash was the ability to use ActionScript to add interactivity and unique effects to websites and applications. This language was relatively easy to learn, and it enabled developers to create complex animations, interactive menus, and other engaging features that made websites stand out. In many ways, Flash was the perfect platform for creating interactive, media-rich websites and applications.</p>
<p>However, despite its many advantages, Flash was not without its challenges. One of the biggest challenges was the lack of compatibility with other web technologies. Flash relied on a proprietary format that was not compatible with other web standards, which meant that websites created with Flash were not always accessible or compatible with all devices and platforms.</p>
<p>In addition, Flash was not always the most secure platform for web development. The use of proprietary formats and the need to download and install the Flash plugin made it vulnerable to security threats and exploits. This was a concern for web developers and users, and it was one of the factors that led to the decline of Flash in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Looking back on it, they could have resolved these issues the same way any other vendor would resolve their security issues.</p>
<p>However, one of the most significant blows to Flash was the decision by Apple not to support it on iOS devices. Apple cited concerns about security and performance, but I personally believe that the true reason was related to control and the profitability of the upcoming App Store. Anyway, Apple&#x27;s refusal to support Flash on iOS devices had a significant impact on the popularity of Flash, and it contributed to the decline of the platform over time.</p>
<p>Despite its challenges, Flash played a significant role in shaping the web as we know it today. Its impact on web design and development cannot be overstated, and it inspired a new era of creativity and innovation on the web by allowing developers to create stunning websites and applications with unique animations and effects. As web technologies continue to evolve, one can only hope that they will continue to inspire the same level of creativity and innovation that Flash once did, and that new ideas will not be dismissed so easily.             <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>In the early days of web development, creating a website was a much simpler task than it is today. Back then, most of us used Macromedia Dreamweaver or similar tools to create static HTML and CSS files, which they uploaded to the server using FTP. These were the days when jobs like &quot;webmaster&quot; were still a thing, and editing the static content remotely took just a second. While we tend to romanticize this era of web development, it&#x27;s important to remember that there were both benefits and drawbacks to this simpler time.</strong></p>
<p>One of the main benefits of using Dreamweaver and FTP was the simplicity of the process. With just a few static files of HTML and CSS, webmasters could quickly and easily create a website. There was no need for complex programming languages or frameworks, and search engines were happy because there was little to no JavaScript blocking content. This made it easy for webmasters to get the job done quickly and efficiently.</p>
<p>However, there were also drawbacks to this approach. For one thing, not having the great tools we have today led to scalability issues. As websites grew in size and complexity, it became harder to manage them using static HTML and CSS files. There was also a lack of version control, which made it difficult to collaborate with other developers and keep track of changes to the code.</p>
<p>Despite these drawbacks, there is something nostalgic and comforting about the simplicity of those early days of web development. It&#x27;s easy to look back on that time with fondness and a sense of longing for the days when creating a website was a much simpler task.</p>
<p>But the truth is that we have moved on to a more modern approach to web development for good reason. Today&#x27;s websites are far more complex than those of the past, and they require more advanced tools and techniques to create and manage. Git has replaced FTP as the preferred method of uploading code to a server, and modern web development frameworks like VueJS and Nuxt have revolutionized the way we build websites.</p>
<p>In the end, it&#x27;s important to remember that the nostalgia we feel for the old days of web development is tempered by the knowledge that we have moved on for good reason. While it may be fun to reminisce about using index.html to get the job done, we must also acknowledge that the web has evolved and that we must evolve with it.</p>
<p>Still, it&#x27;s fun to look back on those simpler times and over-romanticize the use of Macromedia Dreamweaver, FTP, and static HTML and CSS files. A time where building your own website seemed accessible to anyone, apart from esthetics or clean code for that matter.</p>]]></content:encoded>

It can be challenging to keep track of everything, especially when working on complex projects with multiple modules and dependencies. In fact, this context switching appears to be cognitively the most intense. However, have you ever considered using your 🌈 imagination to help you remember code?</strong></p>
<p>I know that sounds kind of lame. But I&#x27;m not exaggerating when I tell you that I often visualize my programming code in physical, real-world places. These places often involve street corners and large cross sections that are capable of having multiple perspectives, providing ample space for storing information. Visualizing code in this way can help to make it more memorable and easier to recall when needed.</p>
<p>In my experience, visualizing code in physical spaces has allowed me to store more information than I usually would. Whenever I feel like my head isn&#x27;t big enough to store everything, I can access these spaces to recall important details.</p>
<p>What&#x27;s even more intriguing is what happens the other way around, that is, whenever I visit one of these places in <em>real life</em>. I immediately associate it with parts of a certain project or codebase. This has created sort of like a barrier between <em>what</em> I know and <em>where</em> I know it, making it easier for me to remember and recall important details.</p>
<p>As a designer by nature, I&#x27;m a more visual person. This might explain why visualizing code in physical spaces works so well for me. Maybe you felt like it was irrelevant or you were just too lazy to put it on paper. That&#x27;s how I felt. But then, something interesting happened. I discovered the power of ChatGPT.</strong></p>
<p>At some point, I realized that those 280 characters on Twitter just weren&#x27;t enough to express all of my ideas (and no, I&#x27;m upgrading to 2000 characters for this reason). And with the help of ChatGPT, I can now take my writing to the next level. No, I won&#x27;t be generating random poetry, but I will be using AI to help with the formatting of my ideas.</p>
<p>This will make my blog easier and more entertaining to read, without sacrificing the key message I want to convey. So from this moment forward, all of my articles will be written by me, but with a little help from my sidekick, ChatGPT.</p>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>As technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, people often switch between different solutions to suit their needs. I, for one, have transitioned from Microsoft Windows to Apple MacOS and eventually landed on Linux Ubuntu. Each switch happened over a ten-year period, which got me thinking about the lifespan of technology and its impact on our lives.</strong></p>
<p>Over the last couple of years, I have come to realize the extent of power that big tech companies have over the industry, especially Apple. While it&#x27;s easy to believe that these companies have our best interests at heart, the reality is often quite different. We need to be aware of the alternatives available and make informed decisions based on our needs, preferences, and context. The market dominance of big tech may seem innocent, but it actually leads to less choice for consumers. In a dramatic sense, this could have the effect of Stockholm Syndrome (or Silicon Syndrome for that matter)</p>
<p>Apple wants to control almost every aspect of our digital lives (and Google is no different). While some might argue that this is simply the market at work, we should remember the influence of information technology in our daily lives is enormous, and growing further every day. Meanwhile, these big tech companies have made so much money, they are able to hire many great lobbyists and lawyers. This allows them to know exactly how far they can go without crossing the line, legally speaking. Unfortunately, since regulators are not nearly as innovative, it quickly becomes an unfair battle.</p>
<p>The immense power and control that Apple wields in the tech industry cannot be overstated. With its dominance over both hardware and software, Apple effectively dictates what goes in and out of its ecosystem, leaving consumers with limited options for customization and choice. In essence, the company has created an environment in which users are heavily reliant on their products and services, leading to a situation where switching to alternative solutions can be seem difficult and daunting. This market position has enabled Apple to maintain its power and influence over users, often to the detriment of healthy competition and innovation in the industry.</p>
<p>While Apple is certainly not the only company to use its market dominance to maintain its power and influence over users, its position at the center of consumer technology today is undeniable. This results in an ethical dilemma, as the more control these big-tech companies gain, the less likely they are to relinquish it. As such, we must scrutinize their actions and decisions to ensure they are in the best interests of their users and to the wider tech ecosystem.</p>
<p>So, what&#x27;s the solution here? Is there even one? While there may not be an easy fix, recognizing the power of big tech and understanding that there are in fact alternatives out there is the first step. Small tech companies are often just as capable and more innovative, and it&#x27;s important to support them. In the near future, I&#x27;m hoping to explore this topic further and turn it into a series of articles, discussing &quot;smallish&quot; tech solutions and how they can be used as alternatives to big tech.</p>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>We have become more and more dependent on technology, and smartphones are at the forefront of it. They are ubiquitous, providing us with an endless stream of information, entertainment, and social interaction. However, have we ever stopped to think about just how much we rely on our phones? Well, that is precisely what I wanted to find out by going without my smartphone for a month.</strong></p>
<p>The idea of going without a smartphone seemed daunting at first. I had been using an iPhone for years, and not a day had gone by without me checking it multiple times. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much I wanted to break free from this constant cycle of phone usage.</p>
<p>So, I decided to take the plunge and embark on my month-long experiment. The first step was to request a physical SIM card and purchase a &#x27;dumb phone.&#x27; The idea behind this was to have a device that would allow me to make calls and send texts, but without any of the bells and whistles of a smartphone. I also downgraded my subscription to only allow for minimal data usage.</p>
<p>Once I had made the switch, I notified my social circle that I would not be able to respond as quickly. To be clear, I was still using social apps, but only on my desktop, and at scheduled times. I also continued to use email for communication.</p>
<p>The first few days were a bit difficult, as I had to adjust to not having my phone with me at all times. But as the days passed, I began to notice some positive changes. For one, I felt more focused and present. I was no longer distracted by constant notifications and mindless scrolling.</p>
<p>Another benefit was that I felt more relaxed. I didn&#x27;t feel like I needed to be constantly connected to the online world, and instead, I could focus on the present moment. It was liberating to be able to take a break from the virtual world and just enjoy the world around me.</p>
<p>However, there were some drawbacks as well. One of the most significant disadvantages was online banking. Without access to a smartphone, verifying my card each time I made a transaction was a cumbersome process. I had to use a separate device for this, which was inconvenient.</p>
<p>But overall, I was surprised to discover that many aspects of life can be managed without a smartphone. I learned that we don&#x27;t necessarily need to be connected to the internet at all times. With a bit of effort, we can still function offline.</p>
<p>After the month-long experiment was over, I reflected on my experience. I realized that going without a smartphone had been a valuable lesson for me. I had learned that I didn&#x27;t need to be constantly connected to the online world to be happy and productive.</p>
<p>In conclusion, living an offline life in 2022 is still possible, and it&#x27;s a fortunate lesson to learn. Technology has undoubtedly made our lives easier in many ways, but it&#x27;s also important to take a break from it from time to time. I encourage everyone to try going without their smartphones for a while and see how it affects them. You might be surprised at the positive changes it can bring.</p>]]></content:encoded>

            <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>At the age of 13, during a family holiday in France, a fellow kid mentioned how he had used Adobe Photoshop to create all sorts of graphics, including a website. I was intrigued and immediately installed a somewhat legal copy of Photoshop 7 when I returned home. Upon opening the program, I was overwhelmed by the many options it provided. There were countless filters, color adjustments, layouts, typographical options, and more. In turned out many of these options were not necessary to create basic designs, which by the way is a lesson that can be applied to most software.</strong></p>
<p>I started to experiment with Photoshop and slowly but steadily managed to create some basic graphics with the help of gradients, bevel and emboss, outer glow and other things now considered to be overkill. Around the same time I discovered Yahoo Geocities, a WYSIWYG website builder that was just what I needed. I uploaded my JPGs, moved them around the screen, and created layouts for my website. I did not need to code, but the platform did offer the ability to do so. I added some JavaScript copied from a Dutch website called LeeJoo, and I was on my way to building all kinds of websites.</p>
<p>I built websites for myself, my Unreal Tournament Clan, game trailers, and finally one for providing free fonts (of which many were copies of Dafont, another font website at that time). This last one, lettertype.tk (translated &quot;fonts.tk&quot;), actually had some potential to be successful when looking back on it, mainly due to its popular domain name. The .TK extension was free to register and allowed me to point it behind the scenes to any other website. I chose my free Geocities website, resulting in a website that looked decent at the time, combined with a very good domain name and free hosting. Even by today&#x27;s standards, this was a sweet deal for a kid who did not have much money or experience with buying actual domain names and setting up hosting. My website was online for several years before being taken down, but I was glad to have had the experience of building my own website and the freedom it provided me.</p>
<p>Around 2005, when I was still in my teens, PHP was already around, but so was Macromedia Flash. I soon realized the potential Flash had in terms of creativity and embraced this new technology to build my next websites. Although it was mostly just snippets or elements of Flash used around my website, like headers, banners, buttons, and animations, I was inspired by the possibilities. My absolute heroes were the folks at 2Advanced, a design studio that had by far the most gorgeous-looking Flash websites. There were many others I followed at the time, but 2Advanced stood out the most.</p>
<p>Part of my daily routine was visiting The FWA (The Favorite Website Awards), which was a curated page of the very best Flash websites around the world, with a new one each day. Can you imagine being served that much inspiration at the age of only 15? I was definitely spoiled, but I appreciated every single fancy-looking Flash website made with the latest techniques and awesome soundtracks (yes, music on websites). Nothing seemed impossible. As time passed, my interest in web design continued to grow. I started to explore other tools, techniques, and programming languages. I learned HTML, CSS and JavaScript to improve my website building skills.</p>
<p>As I delved deeper into the world of web development, I realized that there was so much more to learn and explore. It was now 2006, and Flash was still a driving force behind many of my websites. However, it was around this time that I discovered PHP and the potential it could have on the dynamics of my websites. Up to that point, I had only used static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, but PHP seemed to be able to provide contact forms and login systems, which I considered to be the next step in my development journey.</p>
<p>So I decided to combine the power of PHP with my passion for creating websites by developing a new website that would allow people to send e-mails from and to whichever e-mail address they wanted. I named it Bluemail. The idea behind this was to give people the freedom to send e-mails without having to log in to their e-mail provider, which, most of the time, was their Hotmail account. The blue in Bluemail represented the freedom this provided.</p>
<p>However, as I delved deeper into the development of Bluemail, I soon discovered that this same freedom could potentially provide scammers with a way to send fake e-mails on behalf of someone else. This made me question the rightful existence of my website. Not sure what to do with it, I eventually announced that the website was no longer taking submissions due to the fear of abuse.</p>
<p>However, I did not let this discourage me. Instead, I saw this as an opportunity to explore other avenues of web development. The domain name, which I had bought during a sale for only 1 euro, turned out to be one that someone else wanted to own as well. I ended up selling the domain name for around 200 euros, which I found to be quite a profit. The thrill of having sold my first website, even if it was just the domain name, was a testament to how doing what you love can be rewarding.</p>
<p>I continued to work with PHP more and more and just two years later, the iPhone made its appearance, making Flash obsolete for unfair reasons, if you ask me. However, I did not let this stop me. Instead, I turned my attention to CSS 3 and HTML 5, which had just come out, and started exploring the possibilities there.</p>
<p>Soon enough, I learned to use PHP with a MySQL database and created a social network that allowed my fellow students to create profiles that listed their skills and experience. This platform allowed them to make new connections with others who had similar interests and skills. It was essentially a combination of LinkedIn, Facebook, and Dribbble. I was very proud to call this my first real social network, and I named it Cyaround.com, short for &quot;see you around.&quot; I used this phrase a lot back then, so it stood to reason to use it for my website.</p>
<p>From that point on, I continued to make PHP applications using all the resources at my disposal. I created a web application that allowed users to enter their favorite topics and have the app curate news articles based on those interests, by leveraging the API (if you could call it that) of a popular Dutch news website. I called this app &quot;Het Nieuws.nu&quot; (translated &quot;The News&quot;) and it turned out to be a small but effective app that I ended up using quite often, although I was probably the only one.</p>
<p>After that, I created a platform that allowed users to add products and services to have them reviewed by others in the form of pros and cons. I named this app &quot;Voor-/Nadeel&quot; (translated &quot;Pro/Con&quot;). This resulted in a green-red pie chart, consisting of the positive and negative share of any given product or service. Essentially this provided users with a quick way to see the quality of a subject just by looking at this simple graph. The interesting thing was that each pro and con could be voted up or down, making it more balanced and democratic as a result. It turned out that quite a lot of people were interested in this idea, but at some point, it just no longer attracted any new users and I decided to close down the website, unfortunately. However, my skills and experience with a website like as complex as this one did lead to a number of other business opportunities around that same time.</p>
<p>In 2012, while working part-time as a &quot;webmaster&quot; for a high-tech company that specialized in robotics, I redesigned their website as part of my thesis. The company and I had noticed how their website was filled with jargon and complex imagery that made it difficult for the average person to understand. So, I decided to investigate how I could simplify the website&#x27;s formatting, design, and writing guidelines to make their content more accessible.</p>
<p>After graduating, I started my own company and shortly after was approached by a research group from Delft University of Technology to build their new website similar to the one I had designed before. Drawing inspiration from my previous work, I designed a website that was even better. This caught the attention of other research groups, who soon began asking for similar websites.</p>
<p>Several projects later, rather than reinventing the wheel every time, I decided to create a base template that could be used for any research website. I sold this design to several research groups as a license, but then had an even bigger idea. Why not create a generalized design theme powered by WordPress and distribute it through a centralized network, allowing any research group to create their own website in minutes, instead of going through the process of an entire design project.</p>
<p>I named this platform The Laboratory Network, or LabNet for short. To my pleasant surprise, users were able to use the design I had provided independently, and only a few people ever asked for my help. It was honestly the greatest implicit compliment I had ever received. It has been five years since I launched LabNet, and the service is still around today. Although I only have to check in from time to time to offer help, I am proud to have created a tool that has helped so many people create beautiful and functional websites easier and faster than before.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I haven&#x27;t been sitting still, and I&#x27;m already thinking about a new application that could streamline the content management process even further (but more on that in a later blog post). Meanwhile I&#x27;ve been collaborating with a real estate firm to modernize their current intranet solutions and build related web services to meet their needs. Overall, this has been a great experience, and I&#x27;m committed to continuing to deliver new solutions in the future.</p>
<p>And that&#x27;s where I&#x27;m sitting today. I&#x27;m now 32 years old, and I&#x27;m very proud to have witnessed the web mature along with me personally. It&#x27;s been quite a ride so far, and I hope to keep pursuing my own personal goals for the foreseeable future. I&#x27;ll definitely keep this blog updated with new things happening around me.</p>

So, when I first thought about starting a blog as a web developer, I had my doubts. What could I possibly contribute that hasn&#x27;t been said before? Who would even read it?</strong></p>
<p>These doubts held me back for a while, but then something changed. Someone mentioned to me that my ideas and experiences as a web developer could help others, and maybe even inspire them to pursue their own passions. This small boost to my self-esteem got me thinking about starting a blog, and the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.</p>
<p>As a web developer, I&#x27;ve had my fair share of struggles and successes. I&#x27;ve faced tough challenges and learned valuable lessons along the way. And through it all, I&#x27;ve come to realize that the world of web development is constantly evolving, with new technologies and trends emerging all the time.</p>
<p>That&#x27;s why I decided to start this blog – to share my experiences, insights, and ideas with others who are also passionate about web development. Whether you&#x27;re a beginner just starting out or an experienced developer looking to stay up-to-date with the latest trends, I hope this blog will be a valuable resource for you.</p>
